Event Information
The Architectural History Group welcomes anybody who has an interest in knowing more about architecture and the social conditions that influenced the form of the architecture. The presentation will be by projected images in a Powerpoint format with a continuous narrative.
Proposed syllabus includes English medieval architecture, exploring the fundamentals of Gothic architecture both ecclesiastical and domestic, field trips exploring ecclesiastical architecture, Tudor and Georgian architecture, Victorian and Gothic Revival architecture including a detailed look at A.W.N. Pugin, including a field trip looking at Pugin's work in the locality, Morris and The Arts and Crafts Movement, working through to the modern period.
We have now worked our way through Medieval, Tudor, Jacobean, Victorian and early Modernism architecture and the social conditions that influenced the form of the architecture of those periods.
In June we will be looking at the 20th century and the exploration for a new form of architecture suitable for the exciting potentials brought about by new technology. England was virtually dormant in the mid twentieth century but the latter part brought several architects, either English or practicing in this country to the forefront of world architecture.
We will have a break during July and August due to folk going on holiday, but all being well we will meet again in September to look at work by Foster, Rodgers, Stirling and Zaha Hadid.
When we get to the present time we will need to consider whether to start from the beginning again, but with the added advantage of videos if I can master the technique, and possibly a more detailed and longer look at social conditions to try and put a fresh impetus to the slides. I welcome your feed back as to whether we should do that or just let it finish?
Meeting on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 10.00 to 11.30 in The Guild Hall, Cheadle.
