Event Information

This is a course which starts with a new intake each year.  Each meeting (normally) takes place on the first Wednesday of each month from October to April/May from 9.30 - 11.00 am with the usual meetings location being the upstairs Computer Suite at the Guild Hall, Cheadle. 

The much-increased interest in Family History in recent years is no doubt due, in part, to the television programmes featuring well-known personalities who look into their family history.  However, more importantly, is the fact that use of the Internet now makes finding the necessary information a much easier task for anyone, particularly those who now live away from the area in which their ancestors lived.

The aim of the course is to provide members with sufficient information such that they can progress their research on their own although additional assistance can be given outside the meetings to resolve any issues.

The course is suitable for those with English and Welsh ancestry in particular.   It is aimed at absolute beginners and those who have got some information but perhaps are encountering problems.  The meetings introduce the various sources of information and tips in addition to providing a forum for discussing problems.  Each member can access the relevant sites by use of the Internet-connected computers which are available in the Computer Suite.  This will give them confidence in later accessing the sites on their own computer or elsewhere.

To gain the best from this course, members should have basic computer skills and knowledge of use of the internet.  One of the sessions takes place at Cheadle Library and another at Hanley Archives.   These locations give access, free of charge, to the Ancestry Website, from which much information can be obtained, and other sources of information.
