Vaughan Richardson our chairman
welcomed guests who included our guest speaker Peter Traves, Cllr Karen
Maryon, Chair of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, and colleagues from our
neighbouring U3As.

The AGM started with a stirring rendition of four new
songs masterfully sung by the Not Strictly Barbershop Choir as usual
energetically led by Sarah Williams.

Peter Traves, Corporate Director, Children
and Lifelong Learning Directorate, Staffordshire County Council,
our guest speaker, then gave a bravura tour d'horizon of the
extremely broad responsibilities he has.

This eye-opening talk was followed by Stephen Richman, Director of the Moorlands
College, who enlightened us about our imminent move from G10 to a quieter more
secluded room.

The main business of the AGM was expeditiously despatched, save for a lively
discussion of our finances because the accounts end of year date had been
changed so only the accounts for 11 months were produced and not the full
financial year in order to have the accounts sent out with the call to the AGM.
Also, the change of the Annual fee of £5 to £7 was criticised and a motion to
refer back the decision to the committee was defeated after more argument and
the £7 annual fee was accepted.
Criticism of the re-election of the committee without an election at the AGM was
raised as a symptom of the ossification of our U3A's structures restricting
the introduction of new blood. This was immediately rebutted by the
statement that if people won't volunteer to become members of the committee, or
probably more importantly as group leaders, then self-perpetuation will
continue. Vaughan Richardson noted that his experience of other local AGMs
was exactly the same! (So, as your webmaster has maintained for years, if
you have a skill, an art, or an activity that you think we should pursue - volunteer as a group
leader. It's easier than you think and advice/support is willingly
available from our membership.) At this meeting
we said grateful thanks to -
 | Vaughan for his 11 years devoted, meticulous work as an officer
and group leader of our
U3A, and for guiding us through the last three years of sustained growth |
 | Glenys Grainger
our Hon Treasurer, and |
 | Pam Keates our PR Officer.
|
We also welcomed Phil Silk as
our new Chairman who gave a rousing address on the subject of change.
